We all know about what an atrocity the Holocaust was. There are many fiction books about it. But what most people may not be aware of is that innocent people from Germany and such suffered as well, the war took away their homes and loved ones. Not just people from Germany, many others from all around the world suffered too.
The Book Thief focuses on a young girl with a depressing story, living in Germany during the war and the Holocaust. It even has Death feeling emotional!
Liesel Meminger is taken in by the Hubermanns, whom she takes a while to get accustomed to. Even though she’s illiterate, she loves books, she even steals them! Her adoptive father teaches her how to read, and as time passes she’s able to put behind her sad past and adapt to her new life. She is transported to another world, and she sees how important words are, how powerful they can be. After all, wasn’t it with words that Hitler succeeded in getting people on his side?
Suddenly her new family’s life, and hers, are in danger when they receive an unexpected guest, whom they take in. This fugitive becomes close to their family, he’s especially close to Liesel. They go on like that for a while, but when she begins to believe for a while that things will be okay, a terrible mishap occurs, one that involves bombs…
Everything she loves has always been taken away; will her new life be taken away too? Will this war succeed in causing more people more grief?
